Heat to Turn Dangerous for Those Without Power After Houston
Dangerous Heat Ahead
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory for much of the Houston area, warning that temperatures will climb into the triple digits. This poses a serious risk for those without power, as they will be unable to cool their homes.
Vulnerable Populations
Those most vulnerable to heat-related illnesses include the elderly, young children, and those with chronic health conditions. The NWS urges these individuals to take precautions to stay cool, such as staying in air-conditioned areas, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest hours of the day.
Power Outages
The heat advisory comes as much of the Houston area is still without power following Tropical Storm Harvey. Over 1 million customers are still in the dark, and there is no estimate for when power will be fully restored.
Severe Thunderstorms
The NWS is also monitoring the potential for severe thunderstorms later this afternoon and evening. These storms could produce damaging winds, hail, and flooding. Residents are advised to be prepared and to have a plan in place in case of severe weather.
