Yankees Promote Utility Player Over Struggling Shortstop Oswald Peraza

Peraza Optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre

Oswaldo Cabrera Takes Over as Everyday Shortstop

The New York Yankees have sent struggling shortstop Oswald Peraza to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and promoted utility player Oswaldo Cabrera to take over as the everyday shortstop. Peraza, 22, has struggled at the plate this season, batting just .183 with one home run and five RBIs in 25 games. He has also made several errors in the field. Cabrera, 23, has been more productive at the plate, batting .280 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 25 games. He has also played well in the field, committing just one error. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the move was made to give Peraza a chance to work on his swing and improve his defense. “Oswald has been working hard, but he’s just not where we need him to be right now,” Boone said. “We think sending him to Triple-A will give him a chance to get some regular at-bats and work on some things.” Boone said he believes Cabrera is ready to take over as the everyday shortstop. “Oswaldo has been playing well and we think he’s ready for this opportunity,” Boone said. “He’s a good defender and he’s been swinging the bat well.” The Yankees are hoping that Cabrera can provide a spark to the offense and help the team turn around its recent struggles. The Yankees have lost five of their last six games and are now 16-16 on the season.
